ENG 211 - Literature and the EnvironmentCredit Hour(s): 3 This course explores the vital relationship between literature and the environment, asking how the land has been represented and how changing interpretations of the land have influenced attitudes toward nonhuman nature. The course focuses on writers such as Edward Abbey, Wendell Berry, Annie Dillard, Henry David Thoreau, Denise Giardina, and Leslie Marmon Silko, among others, through a combination of lecture, discussion, and informal and formal writing. 3 Credit(s).
This course is designated as a sophomore literature course and meets the Literature Liberal Arts Requirement. If a student takes a second sophomore literature course and earns a “C” or higher in it, the course may be used to fulfill three credits of the Writing Intensive graduation requirement for Ferrum College. A student cannot earn a grade of “C” or higher in this course unless he or she earns a “C” or better on the writing assignments required by the course.
