Secondary Education: Agricultural Education Emphasis, B.S.

The Ferrum College Teacher Education Program prepares caring and competent pre-professionals as decision-makers for the diverse contexts of 21st-century classrooms, schools and communities. Building upon a solid liberal arts foundation, the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education program assists candidates to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to become effective and caring teachers in grades 6-12. Any student wishing to prepare for a career teaching secondary grades 6-12 may do so by selecting the Secondary Education program with an emphasis in one of the following areas:

  • Agricultural Education
  • English
  • History and Social Sciences

  

Although the Ferrum College Handbook caps the major at 77 credits, all courses listed are required by the VDOE to meet State Regulations.

** As required by State regulation 8VAC20-23-220, Career and Technical Education – Agricultural Education, the Agricultural Education endorsement requires that students take at least 3 semester hours in each of the areas in subdivisions (a - f below), as well as a minimum of 9 semester hours in one concentration area listed in subdivisions (a - f):

a. Plant science

b. Animal science

c. Agricultural mechanics and applied technology with a lab component

d. Agricultural economics and management

e. Forestry and wildlife management

f. Horticulture

This major requires a minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in education courses.

Students must choose BIO-110 from Science Core.
