Sociology

Sociology is the study of basic traits, values and beliefs and how the intersection of these concepts influence behavior of individuals, groups and society. The bachelor’s degree is designed to prepare students to confront the basic challenge of understanding ourselves and others more fully. Sociology students will develop a sociological perspective by actively questioning the way our society operates and why the social structure provides privilege for some while disadvantaging others. Through completion of a well-rounded liberal arts core, courses in comparative theory, historic and present-day policy, and applied research dealing with human subjects, sociology majors will be prepared to succeed in career paths or graduate schools which demand a flexible, resourceful, critically thinking individual.

Sociology majors must participate in a three credit internship with a community agency to practice strong communication skills, critical thinking and ethical problem solving. While engaged in this internship they will identify a topic related to the needs and/or goals of the agency to be investigated through scientific research through a combination of concurrent courses: SOC 391 , SOC 370  Fall, and SOC 470  (a capstone class) in their senior year. Students will meet the experiential component for the major by successfully completing SOC 391 . This undergraduate program offers two emphasis areas – preparing students to engage in Public Sociology or Research Development
